Why do payments need digital identity? An interview with Bhavna Saraf, Santander

The Future Identity Festival brings together innovation leaders from businesses in financial services, retail, entertainment, gaming, education, government and other key verticals, to discuss the future of digital identity, fraud and risk.

At the most recent edition, co-located with FTT Mutuals and the Fintech Talents Festival, we chatted to Bhavna Saraf, Head of Payments Products and Propositions at Santander. The position has recently been created by the bank, Bhavna explains, making her responsible for, “leveraging new technologies in the payments industry to solve customer problems.”

Bhavna highlights that payments are often seen as a utility and the initiation of a transaction is overlooked. “Knowing the source of the funds and the identity of whoever is making the payment, is equally as important as speed,” she explains. Digital identity could be the missing link allowing for the source of a payment to be verified and helping to mitigate fraud and money laundering, while enhancing efficiency.

Watch the full interview below for insights into tackling the challenges of APP fraud, balancing speed with security and, of course, Bhavna’s highlights from the Future Identity Festival.

Registration is now open for our first event of 2024 – Future Identity Finance – join 500+ attendees at etc. venues St. Paul’s, London, to explore how innovation, regulation and customer expectations are changing how we identify ourselves to access financial services.
